Welcome to my audio house cleaning.  As I go through boxes & boxes of old recordings, I have stumbled on some real gems and am proud to be able to share some with you.  Some of the recordings on this page are for sale so click on the "buy it" icon and send me some bucks to help out OK? You can also make your love/hate contribution to my life and mission of preemptive global domination by clicking here.

I am categorizing the content in a generally chronological order.  These recordings I either produced, engineered or in some other way was involved in audio/video production of the artist.   If you see a file with no link to it yet, it means I found a tape but haven't converted it to MP3 yet.  Keep watching . . . I'm trying to throw up a few every few days.

ALL files on this web site are here by the grace of the copyright holders (SR copyrights and in most cases PA copyrights too).  What does all this mean?  It means that the owners of this music want you to have it.  I do not support online piracy but believe that the dissemination of digital music is a boon to both the artists, the public and the business in general - if not the megacorps(e) that dominate the industry.  I remember the days when record labels worked hard to disseminate their products to the public.  They bribed DJs, radio networks and anyone who would turn a favorable ear to their products.  It is about control folks - corporate control of an art media.  The industry is no longer run by music lovers; nope its the era of accountants and lawyers.  Rip away my friends.

THE WELFARE FATHERS Buy It!
Greg Forest,
Ronnie Leatherman, Ron Knuth

This little combo gets together almost every Sunday at the Welfare Cafe in Welfare, TX.  With the addition of Ron Knuth about a year ago, the format has changed a bit - leaning towards a "swinging" sort of groove.  Come on out Sundays!  And check out their new web site!

SEGOVIA, "So In Love With You" Buy It!
This second CD (recorded at Slacker Manor) from Segovia hit the top of the Power Source Western Swing Chart back in April 2005 and is still going strong.  Brothers Reid & Carson Wells have produced a great record with Segovia being joined by studio aces Bobby Flores and Floyd Domino.  You can also get Segovia's first CD online at The Music Office

CLAUDE MORGAN/THE BLAST Buy It!
I might be cheating a bit to call this "recent"  the 1987 recording surfaced a few months ago and Butch & I liked it so much we decided to release it.  This is classic Blast live.  Help yourself to the entire 30-minute Austin Alternatives radio show.  The CD also has a number of studio tracks on it.

austin alternatives

WHOLE SHOWS
Here are the Austin Alternatives Archives as they were broadcast between 1987-1989.

This show was  produced in the basement and ground floor of the old KOKE radio station building at 31st and Lamar.  At the time some easy-listening station occupied the top floor.  Our Austin Flagship Station was Z102, our hostess, "the voice" Elise stuck with us through 84 national broadcasts for less money than I would like to note here; bless her.  In our prime we were on 84 stations in the U.S. and three European networks, including RAI Italy. Keith Ayres was running Glitch Records and Louis Meyers was managing the Killer Bees from one of the outside suites.  It was a great hemp-friendly music incubator.  Down in the bowels of the basement I had taken over the studio space previously occupied by Joe Gracy.  The studio had the vibes from many great recordings when I moved in and, although I did thrash a bit during the radio show era, I hope I left it the same way.  The show turned out to be a bit ahead of its time - we couldn't find sponsors for bands with weird names like 10,000 Maniacs and Jesus and Mary Chain.  Natalie probably owns Nike by now.

I would like to thank Keith for his musical vision that he brought to the show.  We were an alternative music program and I was, to this point, pretty mainstream. With some of the bands Keith booked I didn't get it at first.  As an example when we booked Sonic Youth, we had to roll tape without a sound check.  I was in the bus behind Liberty Lunch when the loudest, gnarliest, nastiest audio I had ever heard erupted from the stage. All the meters slammed in to the red - I yanked off my headphones wondering what was going on.  Keith came into the bus and said, "Are you getting this?"  "Getting what?" I replied.  "THIS!!  Its the show!" he screams.  "The What?!"

Had I done my research I would have gotten it - Sonic Youth was just that: sonic.  After a few more bands like the Dead Milkmen, Fetchin' Bones and the Meat Puppets, I finally got it. These are great artists doing great stuff - it isn't all pretty and musical - "pretty music" just wasn't vogue at the time.  But man did it rock.

Other people that need thanking are the corps of interns from UT and others that crawled in the mud, blood and beer under the stages to run our snake, who selflessly gave of themselves keying in radio stations into our database and would proof our copy.  In particular Junda Woo and Jennie Brasford deserve a special thanks.

Tech Notes"
Digital recording was in its infancy when these programs were recorded.  The recording procedure was to split from the Front Of House mix to our bus out in the parking lot out back.  The signal was run into a Studiomaster 16x4x2 mixer with a Lexicon PCM60, Yamaha SPX-90 through aux busses and from there to a SONY F-501 PCM converter onto VHS video tape. Back in the studio the digital tape was transferred to a TASCAM-32 at 15ips with a bit of compression inline.  The 1/4 track masters were sent to the duplicator and the cassettes mailed to the stations.  All mixes were done on location direct to 2-track.  No safety line, no net, no smoke, no mirrors, and sadly, no remix.  Needless to say some of the recordings are a bit rough - especially those without a sound check.

There may be some duplication of files - some of the artists got "greatest hits" return appearances.  Some of the files are not duplicates but utilize footage not used in the first show appearance. More information about the concerts and sampled shows are being added in the order I find them in the shoebox . . .
